We rejected the first attempt to cast the bogie cannon axle boxes due to cracks in critical areas. The job was then passed to William cooks who successfully cast them. Here they are on the Juarsti machine at CTL Seal for stage 1 machining. This prepared the faces for welding on of manganese steel liners.

jamie Black and Sam from CTL Seal discuss the machining of the bogie frame plates with John and Alan from CTL Seal. The plates have been tack welded together to ensure the holes are correctly lined up. The job os to machine the edges that require a machined finish and to drill/ream all of the holes for assembly.

Machining is now well under way. The frame keeps, which close the horn gaps at the bottom, are a critical fit in this area.

Cannon boxes with the large face liners and small side liners welded in place. The liners are made from manganese steel which is very hard wearing. However, a special weld procedure had to be developed for this work.

Generic Engineering in Rotherham have been manufacturing the components for the cannon axle boxes. On the left is the axlebox end cover. This is in halves so that the covers can be removed and the bearings can be inspected. Next to it is the enclosure sleeve in steel. This has an oil flinger round the outside so that oil is sprayed into the bearing area. The alloy part is the enclosure ring in halves. You can see the grooves of the labyrinth seal. Centrifugal force forces the oil into the grooves and prevents the lubricant from escaping. Finally on the right it the adjustment washer which will be machined on assembly to give the correct amount of clearance. The brass nut is the oil draing plug which has a rectangular slot to allow a sample of oil to be taken for testing.

Highslide JS All the bolt holes need a small countersink to ensure that the head of the bolts sits firmly on the frame plate. Here, Ian is using the small magnetic drill.
